Behavior of the Mole Cricket
- Usually they fly only when moving long distances.
- They can fly up to 8km in mating season.
- Mole crickets are omnivores, feeding on larvae, worms, roots, and grasses.
- Mole Crickets are nocturnal and live underground.
- Mole crickets amplify their song by chirping in a burrow carefully sculpted into the shape of a double exponential horn, which acts as a megaphone.
The need for Mole Cricket Control
If you haven’t seen one of these creatures in the flesh, you have no doubt heard the urban legends. Ok, maybe there are none, but they do exist in nightmares – where its dark. On a serious note – Mole Crickets do do damage in the dark, underground mainly. Their damage can be recognized by irregularly raised burrows and dying grass. And, like zombies, they come out to feed on the surface after dark.
Controlling the Beasts
As with most crawling pests – we tend to buy over the counter solutions and spray till our hearts feel better. But what you don’t know about most of those solutions is that they simply heighten the insects resistance to insecticide and pollute the very air you breathe. With more toxins than cigarette smoke and less potency on the bug – perhaps the theory of the bugs living forever is generated by our own doing. Just stop ok? Rather call in a professional. Less is more when it comes to chemicals, and when properly administered, more effective control can be seen.
