    Facts About Cockroaches
    • The name “cockroach” comes from the Spanish word “cucaracha” “bug streak”
    • They are nocturnal and avoid light (watch them scurry when the light is turned on).
    • They love warm dark places and are considered sociable.
    • Cockroaches display collective decision-making.
    • The largest species is Megaloblatta longipennis, which can reach 97mm in length.
    • Run for your life if that meets you in a dark alley.
    Cockroach Reproduction
    • Females produce an egg case (ootheca) which protrudes from the tip of the abdomen.
    • On average, females produce 9–90 ootheecae.
    • After about two days, the egg cases are placed on a surface in a safe location.
    • Egg cases are about 0.9 centimetres long, brown, and purse-shaped.
    • Immature cockroaches emerge from egg cases in 6–8 weeks and require 6–12 months to mature.
    • They can survive 2 years and females produce an average of 150 young. (!)
    Cockroach Diet (sounds ominous?!)
    • Cockroaches are omnivorous and opportunistic. They eat MOST things.
    • They particularly enjoy fermenting things, ie decomposing matter.
    • They also eat their own dead and dying. Basically clean up after everyone.

    Cockroach Control – Possible?

They have been predicted to outlive the human race – could this be possible? For anyone who has had a cockroach infestation you could believe this. You have probably have also witnessed (generally in the company of a VIP guest) the one that survived. The one that you sprayed enough insect repellent to sink a small ship, and low and behold the very white, and covered in the remnants of your very last efforts turns to look at you die hard style – and ask you “what else have you got?” Its time to take note – cockroaches are not a “clean” or “dirty” house thing, they are just another pest that moves in to enjoy your warm hospitality. You are probably a nice person.
